Expectation vs Reality: Elle Macpherson in Conversation with Tara Keeney

On business, fame, and not giving a F.

There’s a difference between a life that looks good from the outside (particularly on Instagram) — and one that feels good from within.

In a recent conversation with Tara Keeney — founder of Look Who I Found, a growing platform known for the not so often talked about stories, experiences, and opinions of inspiring individuals — our founder Elle Macpherson offered compelling frameworks for living a life not of perfection, but of alignment.

Elle spoke candidly about uncertainty, ambition, criticism, identity, and what it means to truly live — not by expectation, but by intention.

On Uncertainty — And Choosing Abundance

In a world that feels increasingly unpredictable, Tara poses a question many are asking: How do you respond to uncertainty?

Elle’s answer is both simple and empowering:

“First of all, don’t be in fear, because whatever you put your energy in, whatever you focus on, you magnetize.”

This philosophy is rooted in Elle’s lived experience and awareness, something she delves deeply into within her book — that attention is not neutral. It creates.

“So you have the choice of whether you want to expand fear or you want to expand joy. It is your choice.”

For Elle, this is not about ignoring reality. It’s about directing energy. Where you place your focus becomes the experience you live.

Fear vs Uncertainty

Elle draws a powerful distinction — one that reframes how we approach the unknown:

“I think there’s a big difference between fear and uncertainty… fear is a projection of the future… uncertainty is: I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I know why I’m doing it.”

It’s here that clarity emerges. Not in knowing every step. But in understanding your why.

“So you focus on the why, not the what or the how. Always focus on the why.”

In a culture that often demands certainty before action, this is a return to something more instinctive. Some call this trusting your gut, and while it’s easier said than done, Elle believes it’s the way.

The Power of Desire — And Preparation

Ambition, for Elle, has never been accidental. Reflecting on her early career and her desire to land the cover of Sports Illustrated, she speaks openly about both disappointment and determination:

“It wasn’t me… it was Paulina Porizkova that year… disappointing.”

But rather than seeing this as failure, she saw it as feedback.

“I said to myself, next year I am going to prepare for this. And I did.”

Preparation, in her world, is holistic.

“I prepared physically, emotionally, mentally… and I arrived feeling so confident and so amazing, grounded in the desire for independence and freedom.”

And the result?

“It paid off.”

For Elle this was never about the outcome — rather it was the intention behind it. She wanted to feel freedom, independence, and empowerment. And in combining preparation with desire, she was able to achieve this and more.

On Criticism — And Letting Go of Perception

Being in the public eye since the age of 19, Elle’s relationship with criticism has evolved over the years — from something that once shaped her, to something that no longer defines her.

“What other people think of me is none of my business.”

“I just sort of don’t give a fuck anymore… I mean, I do… I totally care, but I don’t mind, you know, if people have a different opinion.”

This is another subtle distinction. This is not indifference. It’s detachment. The ability to care — without being controlled.

From Performance to Authenticity

For much of her career, Elle was trained to become what others needed her to be.

“As a model, you are paid to show up and be somebody else’s expectation of you… and I was very, very good at it.”

Her identity was fluid, adaptable, and performative.

“Now you’re a beach girl… now you're a suntan girl… you’re whatever.”

Over time, something shifted. Elle got to connect to who she truly was.

“As I’ve relaxed and allowed myself to be… to bring me into everything that I do, it’s just become so flowful and joyful and blissful.”

This is where Elle speaks of her true self emerging. Not as a fixed state — but as an embodiment of permission. To stop performing and to start being.

“I would say I am the most authentic version of myself today.”

A Life Led From Within

What becomes clear throughout the conversation is that Elle’s approach to life is deeply internal.

She does not look outward for validation, direction, or certainty. She looks inward. To instinct, to feeling, to alignment.

“If you feel that spark… you don’t need to know how… you just need to know that… you’re moved.”

This inner guidance is often talked about in cliches, yet for Elle this has felt like an arriving home.

While the conversation with Tara spans career, relationships, and personal growth, there is an underlying thread that connects it all: living in a way that feels true.

This philosophy extends into Elle’s work — including WelleCo, which was founded not as a trend-driven business, but as a reflection of her own wellness journey, and a belief that true beauty through wellness is not something to chase — but something to support.

Elle believes that when your head, heart, body and soul are nourished, balanced, and aligned, that everything else flows easily.

This is not about perfection. It’s about consistency. About awareness. About self love. About choosing, daily, where you place your energy.

Focus Creates Reality

If there is one idea that lingers from Elle’s conversation, it’s this: You have more agency than you think.

“When I learned that I actually have the power to create my reality through where I put my focus, everything changed.”

It’s a reminder that life is not just something that happens to you. It happens through you: it’s something you participate in.

Through your attention. Your choices. Your beliefs.

When it comes to wellness advice, Elle doesn’t offer a rigid protocol or a set of rules. She offers something more powerful: perspective.

A way of seeing the world — and yourself — that is rooted in possibility, not limitation.

Where uncertainty becomes opportunity. Where criticism loses its power. Where authenticity becomes both the journey and the destination. Where, ultimately, the life you create is shaped not by what you fear — but by what you choose to focus on.

In the end, that choice is always yours.
