This humble plant pigment has gone viral on TikTok. So why is everyone so obsessed with it?

If you've been on TikTok recently, you're likely to have scrolled right into the latest wellness trend that's taken over the platform – chlorophyll. The hashtag alone has received more than 143 million views, with thousands of enamoured users swearing that the micro algae has cleared their skin, assisted with weight loss and helped to reduce their bloating.

Here at WelleCo we’re big proponents of chlorophyll, which is why we included spirulina, known for its potent chlorophyll properties, in our iconic greens powder, The Super Elixir™But what exactly is chlorophyll, and why is it suddenly so popular on social media?

What is chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is a micro algae, recognisable for its vivid green hue. It's known as a photo-synthesiser found in plants – think wheatgrass, barley grass, spirulina, blue and green algae. WelleCo formulator Dr Simone Laubscher PHD, a Clinical Nutritionist and Naturopath, names chlorophyll as her favourite superfood.

"Chlorophyll is the substance that gives plants their green pigment and allows them to absorb energy from the sunlight," she explains. "We are all made up of over 100 trillion cells and chlorophyll has the most powerful impact on the cells, determining our overall health and longevity."

What are the benefits of chlorophyll?

TikTok users credit regularly drinking chlorophyll with clearing their acne and eczema, improving their digestion and leaving their complexion glowing. This is likely due to chlorophyll's high antioxidant levels, which help the skin to heal and fight against elements that contribute to the ageing of the skin.

According the Dr Laubscher, chlorophyll is also a great detoxifier that reduces inflammation in the body. "Your body needs a good daily dose of chlorophyll to reduce acidic wastes and inflammation that clog up your liver and cause weight gain."

How do I take chlorophyll?

Rather than buying liquid chlorophyll on its own, Dr Laubscher recommends opting for The Super Elixir™ to give your entire body everything it needs to feel and look its best. "I add 2 teaspoons of The Super Elixir™ to my green juice each morning," she says.

Not only will you be getting all the skin and gut-boosting benefits of chlorophyll via spirulina, you'll also be reaping the rewards of more than 45 plant-based wholefoods, herbal extracts, vitamins, minerals and probiotics.
