In The Swim

This photographer will make you see your local pool in a whole new way.

German photographer Stephan Zirwes uses drones to shoot aerial perspectives of public swimming pools. "They remind me of my childhood when I spent a lot of time in public pools," he said. "Public pools can still be a symbol for the importance that water should be free accessible to everyone."

The Pools series features public pools, from standard lap pools to abstract shapes in South Africa and the US. They are all photographed from directly overhead and set against a custom-made backdrop pattern that draw the eye into the image’s focal point.

“People are more used to public pools,” he said. “It is a part of the social-cultural life, open for all kind of social classes where people spend a lot of time, especially in their childhood and which leaves pleasant memories. Everybody can afford the small amount of the entry fee. I like this way of thinking.”
